Less than 50 miles north of New York City , Harriman State Park  encompasses 52,000 acres of woodland trails, lakes and wildlife.   It remains one of the few very  special wildlife areas close to the city  and in large part  maintained by many dedicated volunteers of the New York - New Jersey Trail Conference.
